Coldplay announce Ghost Stories album and magical new single The band will release their sixth album in May and have just unveiled a new single called 'Magic Coldplay have given the first details of their forthcoming sixth studio album and a new single. The LP will be called Ghost Stories and is set to take the band in a very different direction than their previous work, as evidenced in their magical new single. Gone are the broad stadium anthems of Mylo Xyloto in favour of a tighter and more intimate sonic palette from Chris Martin and company. Ghost Stories will be released on May 19 and is available for pre-order on iTunes. The album track-list in full: 1. 'Always In My Head' 2. 'Magic' 3. 'Ink' 4. 'True Love' 5. 'Midnight' 6. COLDPLAY RELEASE NEW SONG, ALBUM COMING MAY 19 Over the course of their eighteen-year career, Coldplay have proven equally adept at writing both bombastic pop hits and more subdued, resonant songs. Their latest single, the subtle, indie rock-influenced “Magic,” fits decidedly in the latter category, and you can stream it after the break. In addition to the new song, Coldplay announced that they will release their sixth studio album, Ghost Stories on May 19, 2014. Between “Magic” and another single, “Midnight,” which premiered last week, the new album is shaping up to be quite a departure for the English group, who once again found massive success in 2011 with “Paradise” and “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall.” The nine-song tracklist for Ghost Stories is available below, and the album is up for pre-order now on iTunes. 1. Always In My Head 2. Magic 3. Ink 4. True Love 5. Midnight 6. Another’s Arms 7. Oceans 8. A Sky Full Of Stars 9. O link

COLDPLAY RELEASES NEW SINGLE “MAGIC”, AND… UGH. (REVIEW). Make fun all you want, but I was really looking forward to what Coldplay has up their sleeve. However, I’m really not diggin’ “Magic”, which is supposed to be the lead-off single from their upcoming record Ghost Stories (to be released in May). To me it sounds like 2008 Radiohead, but with an extra dose of pop and not nearly as interesting. I also don’t know why that song warrants a nearly-5-minute track time… it’s the same thing over and over. And it’s not interesting. Not to mention that there’s no real instrumentation except for some guitar tinkering. Is this supposed to be like Thom Yorke’s Eraser? …because it’s failing. Did I mention that it’s just not interesting? The lyrics are contrived as well. Bummer… I hope the record is better. I was hoping Mylo Xyloto was just a left field experiment that went wrong… kinda a-la U2′s POP in 1997. Except that record became my favorite U2 album, whereas Mylo is the only Coldplay album that I don’t have in my iTunes collection. What happened to the 2000-2002 band that impressed me so much? link

Coldplay Work 'Magic' on New Song, Name New Album 'Ghost Stories' By Kory Grow March 3, 2014 8:40 AM ET Coldplay have officially awoken from their quasi-hibernation. The British rock group will put out their sixth album, Ghost Stories, on May 19th. To announce the release of the record, the band is streaming its second track — the easygoing and typically romantic pop track "Magic." The 10 Best Coldplay Songs, As Picked by Rolling Stone Readers Other than the harder-hitting and anthemic soundtrack cut "Atlas," released last fall to accompany The Hunger Games: Chasing Fire, the band have put out only one new song since the 2011 release of their fifth LP, Mylo Xyloto. That track, "Midnight," was released with no context or hint of an album, though the track list for Ghost Stories confirms it is the nine-song LP's centerpiece, appearing at Number Five. The track curiously showed off Coldplay's chillier side and atypical sounds for the group, including flitting synth lines, minimal EDM buildup and effects obscuring frontman Chris Martin's usually rich vocals. "Magic" is more of a return to form. Although the track leads with a bass-heavy, almost electronic-inflected groove – not unlike one of Radiohead's moodier tracks – Martin's voice makes it sound like vintage Coldplay. "Call it magic," he sings. "Call it true. Call it magic, when I'm with you." And even though the band includes thoughtful, deeply textured production touches like warbling synths and guitar reverb that lingers a little longer than usual, Martin intones the falsetto "woos" and a catchy "Yes, I do" hook that, along with a lush acoustic guitar buildup in the middle, prove it to be Coldplay through and through. The band has yet to announce live dates other than an opening night performance at Austin's iTunes festival during South by Southwest on March 11th. Fans who cannot attend the Texas gig will be able to watch the performance in a free live stream on iTunes. A "deluxe" version of Ghost Stories will be available at Target with three exclusive tracks. link

Coldplay announce sixth album 'Ghost Stories', unveil new single 'Magic' Those of you suffering from Coldplay withdrawals have just a few short months to wait for the new album from Chris Martin and co., as they will release their sixth long player 'Ghost Stories' on May 16th next. The album is a brief one with just nine tracks in total on the collection, including 'Midnight' which we debuted here on site last week. The new single 'Magic' has also received an airing this morning and you can check it out above. Ghost Stories' album art features a pair of wings, which you can see below. The two songs released thus far signal something of a change of tack from the ballads the band are most associated with with the Jon Hopkins-produced 'Midnight' and now 'Magic' revealing a more ambient sound which might alienate a section of the band's fanbase. 1. Always in My Head 2. Magic 3. Ink 4. True Love 5. Midnight 6. Another’s Arms 7. Oceans 8. A Sky Full of Stars 9. O link

Coldplay’s “Magic”:The Full‘Ghost Stories’ Song Coldplay announced their sixth LP Ghost Stories and previewed new track “Magic” last night after the Academy Awards (perhaps some form of protest for their Hunger Games: Catching Fire song “Atlas” not getting nominated?), and now the song is streaming in full. It begins as an intimate number built on a simple drum machine beat and plaintive piano chords, with some electronics twinkling in the background. Eventually, though, it swells into an acoustic singalong with the requisite Edge-indebted guitar lines and Chris Martin‘s falsetto chant. When combined with previously released “Midnight,” it certainly seems the Brits are toning down their trademark grandeur in exchange for a more minimalist, atmospheric set of songs. Hear “Magic” below. Ghost Stories is out May 19. link

Coldplay's New Album Ghost Stories Coming In May 9-track album is available for pre-order on iTunes now. After sneaking a new song
out on us last week, Coldplay sprung another surprise on us Monday morning (March 3) with the reveal of the details on their upcoming sixth album. The nine-track Ghost Stories is due out on May 19, with pre-orders available now on iTunes. After the ambush minimalist preview of the track "Midnight," they also announced that the album's official first single will be "Magic," which is available for download with pre-orders. Not much is known about the follow-up to 2011's experimental Mylo Xyloto, but "Midnight" and "Magic" both hint that the group may have moved away from the radio-friendly anthems that have made them arena stars across the planet into a more introspective, quiet zone. Set to a spare drum machine-like beat, warm, subtle keyboards and a throbbing bass, "Magic" features the lines, "Call it magic/ Call it true/ Call it magic when I'm with you." The song follows a mostly midtempo path, with singer Chris Martin staying in a reflective, sing/talk pocket until climbing into his signature falsetto midway through, at which point echoey U2-like guitars bleed into the mix. The full track listing for Ghost Stories: 1. "Always In My Head" 2. "Magic" 3. "Ink" 4. "True Love"
5. "Midnight"
6. "Another's Arms"
7. "Oceans" 8. "A Sky Full Of Stars"
9. "O" A deluxe edition of the album with three bonus tracks will be available at Target. The band will headline the opening night of the first U.S. iTunes Festival at SXSW on March 11, with the performance streamed live and on-demand for free through the iTunes store. link

Coldplay: the discreet return of the biggest band in the world The British stadium-rock ensemble quietly release a new single Without fuss or fanfare, Coldplay have quietly released a new track, Magic, and announced a new album, Ghost Stories. A gentle, understated ballad with no accompanying video, it represents a very discreet return for such a big band, but by the summer, I suspect, Coldplay will be inescapable. Coldplay’s sixth album will arrive on May 19 (via Parlophone Records). Fans who pre-order Ghost Stories will receive an instant download of the new single (which can be streamed here). It is a little gem of a pop song, riding gently on a deep rolling bass and tingling guitar shimmer, with Chris Martin crooning softly about magic and love, relying on qualities of fragility and sincerity to keep triteness at bay. It follows the even more subtle release last week of a single track, Midnight, an ambient, autotuned mood piece accompanied by a simple but atmospheric night vision video. With both of these taster releases lacking the epic grandeur of previous hits, the implication is that arguably the biggest rock band of the 21st century (certainly in terms of hit singles, successive multi-million-selling albums and sustained worldwide appeal) are in a restrained, introspective mood. Or maybe they are just building up slowly. An internet broadcast live appearance opening the iTunes festival at SXSW in Texas on March 11 will reveal more. A softly, softly approach might be considered unusual in the context of anthemic stadium rock, yet it is perfectly judged for this moment in the music business. More than that, the sound strikes me as just right in a world that seems to have turned its back on guitars. Despite the assertion of Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys at The Brits that “rock and roll will never die”, loud, attacking guitar music has been conspicuously absent from the singles charts for years now. And in a vicious commercial circle, what doesn’t sell doesn’t get access to popular radio, which is still considered the most important factor when it comes to hit-making. Coldplay may look like a rock band, perform like a rock band, and have the kind of visionary scale and purposeful pride of a great rock band, but their keyboard-led sound and Chris Martin’s classic songwriting instincts have allowed them to stay in tune with shifts towards a more electronic approach favoured by the digital pop generation. There’s certainly nothing in Coldplay’s comeback to scare radio programmers. Yet Coldplay haven’t gone directly to radio. For now, they are holding back, letting social networks do the work. It is interesting to compare and contrast their approach with their heroes U2, who have been gearing up for their own return. Bono has made comments about both his nervousness and U2’s eagerness to re-establish their status as the world’s greatest rock band, the implication being that there is a lot at stake here, continued relevance or a slide into retro nostalgia. After a long absence (U2 last released an album in 2009, Coldplay in 2011) the Irish band emerged with a track, Invisible, previewed during the US Super Bowl for maximum impact, and given away as a free charity-based download, with a brash, triumphalist live video. Produced by Danger Mouse, the song has an electronic pulse that attempts to realign U2 with the new pop sensibility. And yet everything about it seems big, forceful and, consequently, oddly old-fashioned compared with Coldplay’s self-confident mysteriousness. It is perhaps unfair to characterise this as a battle of the bands, Coldplay versus U2, for surely there is room for more than one great stadium-rock ensemble at a time. But it may be a battle for the soul of rock. When it comes to bragging rights about size and popularity, will Coldplay’s subtle approach see off the old-school drama of U2? If rock is not dead, it may be changing beyond recognition. link

Coldplay Work Low-Key 'Magic' Ahead of 'Ghost Stories' Album Successor to 2011's 'Mylo Xyloto' drops May 19 Coldplay showed off their outdoorsy side recently with "Midnight," a quiet, Auto-Tuned song that bears a surprising similarity to the woodsy tone poems of Bon Iver. Of course, a new track (and new video, directed by Mary Wigmore) signals a new album, which Coldplay have now officially announced. Chris Martin and co. will follow-up 2011's Mylo Xyloto with Ghost Stories, a nine-track effort that will be released globally on May 19 via Parlophone/Atlantic. "Midnight" appears on Ghost Stories, but is not the LP's official lead single. That distinction belongs to "Magic," a low-key meditation on love that leaves behind the multi-colored, stadium-sized grandeur of Mylo Xyloto for soft-edged sonics that mostly look inward — save for a chirping vocal refrain from Martin. Listen to "Magic" via the video above. (Also worth noting: "Atlas," Coldplay's Golden Globe-nominated, Oscar-snubbed contribution to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack, does not feature on Ghost Stories.) Pre-orders of Coldplay's sixth full-length are currently available through iTunes. Fans who reserve the record will receive an instant free download of "Magic." Find the Ghost Stories cover art and track list below. And for an early look at Coldplay's new material, be sure to tune in to the band's March 11 performance at the first-ever iTunes Festival at SXSW in Austin. The concert will be live-streamed and available on demand through the iTunes Store, iTunes Radio, Apple TV, and on Apple devices. Ghost Stories track list: 1. "Always in My Head" 2. "Magic" 3. "Ink" 4. "True Love" 5. "Midnight" 6. "Another's Arms" 7. "Oceans" 8. "A Sky Full of Stars" 9. "O" link

COLDPLAY ANNOUNCES ALBUM RELEASE DATE & DEBUTS NEW SONG THAT'S JUST SO THEM — LISTEN Three years after, Mylo Xyloto, Coldplay has announced that the release date for their newest album, Ghost Stories, will be May 19. This news comes after Coldplay debuted the song “Midnight” on Feb. 25 in a “surprise release,” but really, does that phrase even have meaning in a post Beyoncé ’s Beyoncé world? “Midnight” was released along with a music video and has been described a being “moody” and having a Bon Iver-like sound. Along with the album announcement, Coldplay released a second song from the album called “Magic.” Unlike “Midnight,” “Magic” sounds very typically Coldplay. There is a pretty heavy and constant beat, but as soon as the piano comes in and joins Chris Martin’s singing, there’s no doubt that this is Coldplay. The song compares love to magic (“And if you were to ask me/ After all that we’ve been through/ If I still believe in magic/ Well, yes I do.”) which is a pretty simple idea and the song isn’t the most spectacular thing you’ve ever heard, but I will say, it’s calming and it’s easy to listen to. And if those two things aren’t what you look for from Coldplay, then what do you look for? The band also released the album’s track list and judging by the song titles it seems like it will have a mystical theme. It is called Ghost Stories after all. 1. Always In My Head 2. Magic 3. Ink 4. True Love 5. Midnight 6. Another’s Arms 7. Oceans 8. A Sky Full Of Stars 9. O Pre-order of Ghost Stories is available through iTunes and includes an instant download of “Magic.” Coldplay will also be releasing a deluxe version with three bonus songs and which will be available exclusively at Target. link
