Rough Translations for the two articles that gai so graciously (and thankfully) posted: (I could not, for some reason, get the spoilers to work for me this morning.)
Exclusive Interview: The path of Brazil, Chris Martin, Coldplay, Beyoncé talks about, new tour and can break the band
The POPLINE chatted with Chris Martin, lead singer of Coldplay, a few days before the arrival of the band in Brazil. Martin was really helpful and answered all our questions: Talked about Beyoncé, Noel Gallagher, awards, the band's future and, of course, on the disc tour " The Head Full Of Dreams" which arrives in São Paulo and Rio de January April.
POPLINE - For us start this talk, I would like to mention that Coldplay just won the prize of NME 'Godlike Genius' award and the "Best British Group" at the BRIT Awards. How did you receive these two awards as important a few months after the lançamendo "A Head Full Of Dreams"? Chris Martin - Well, the truth is that we are so long there and we understand that sometimes you win prizes, sometimes you lose and many awards people do not remember you. The awards in the real mean nothing, but it's really fun to win them haha .
PL - haha and go in the party too, right? CM - Absolutely! It is wonderful! In fact, we love the awards, but we try not to give too important not to get too attached to the prizes, if you do not have to always take them into consideration, you know?
PL - Yes of course ... You can not take it into account in relation to work, but welcome them and thank you for it. CM - Yes! You know, many people in the world are betting on lottery and nobody expects to win anything. This is how we feel about musical awards. We do our music, sometimes we win awards and that's great, but do not do it for the prize. If we would not be disappointed most of the time haha
PL - Well, speaking of music that you do, remember that you said that "The Head Full Of Dreams" would be a more hippie album and all other records were like a journey to this. You still have this feeling for this work? CM - Yes! I have. Actually, I do not know. Haha I am proud of all our albums. We worked hard on all of them. I think in my mind, I always hope that we arrive at a place where we can feel completely free and I think with this album we achieved it. I do not know if this is the best album or the most popular, but for me to get to "The Head Full Of Dreams" is very important because we talk about things on the album that always wanted to talk.
PL - How do you differentiate this album from the others, after all Coldplay has undergone a major evolution, musically speaking, then how do you explain these changes? CM - Well, I think because of the time we live in, we tried to use all styles and sounds. Regarding the lyrics of this album, I could not have written these songs ten years ago ... To get these songs, I lived many things, many readings ... You know?
PL - Of course. As a person and composer you change a lot and this is reflected in his art and his music. CM - Exactly! The person who wrote the things of the first album is a different person than I am now. I was a young boy and I am now an old man hahaha
PL - Not that old! Haha Regarding collaborations in "The Head Full Of Dreams"; in the past we worked with Rihanna and now we have seen in the credits Beyonce and Tove Lo. How were these partnerships, as happened? CM - As ... Hmm good, sometimes when I'm writing a song, a person appears in my head and I think, 'Wow, it would be nice if that person could sing' and sometimes is like music will be shaping. In reality, when you write a song and think of a person, is it! There is no way to change. In the case of Beyonce, have been friends for a long time and of course, it is one of the best singers of the earth ... I was just waiting for the right song to invite her to sing.
PL - You also worked with Noel Gallagher on the track "Up & Up" and remember that you said that the new album would influence artists you like a lot, "Oasis of the Drake." How was working alongside Noel, I believe you are a fan of Oasis? CM - Yes, of course! Noel know personally for a long time and it's the same thing ... It's very good to pay tribute to someone you like so much.
PL - Well, it was a big media frenzy when you said that "The Head Full Of Dreams" could be the last Coldplay album. This idea is something that has really taken into consideration or just a redesign launches, for example in other formats as EPs or singles only? CM - No ... the truth is I do not know! I do not know ... I think that this record took so long to be done and we are so excited about the tour, which really do not know what will be the future. Maybe we will have a new album and maybe we will have nothing more. I really do not know. Now we have this album, just released ... Make sense?
PL - Of course! You are focused, working on "The Head Full Of Dreams" now. The future is uncertain, it may have a new album or not. CM - It! At this point we are so excited about this album and tour and all the wonderful countries that we visit ... I do not want to think too much "forward".
PL - You will come to Brazil next month for a stadium tour sold out. Are you excited to come here and you expect this enthusiasm of Brazilian fans? CM - No, I did not expect that! You know, we've been in Brazil many times and most people will tell you the same thing about South America. The people there make you feel like part of the people, it is a wonderful feeling. I do not know exactly what happens, but it is something related to people's behavior when they are together in groups, such as football games and concerts ... You know how to have fun! When you are English, like me, you do not always know how to have fun. haha
PL - is a very different atmosphere, is not it? CM - Yes, of course! We are also excited to play there in the year of the Rio Olympics! It will be very cool, I feel very honored.
PL - The people here are also very excited by the arrival of Coldplay! Well, the last live performances of the band, as the Super Bowl and the BRITS, we saw that look impressive with flowers and bright colors. We'll have it here too? How will the tour in terms of stage and structure? CM - All I can say is that if you like Coldplay, will be a good show. We will also have all the tricks, all the colors, lights, fireworks and all that stuff ...
PL - And the setlist? We will hear the classic Coldplay? CM - Definitely! See you there!
Chris Martin,Coldplay : "We focus on people who make you happy"
"Thanks for talking to me". If you stop to analyze this simple greeting, I never fall into the account that outlines the leader of one of the conveners bands of our time. Chris Martin, singer, songwriter, guitarist and keyboardist for Coldplay, speaking from Los Angeles, days before embarking on a new tour of the British group, with the excuse of the presentation of the album A Head Full of Dreams, which will begin in Argentina. "I look for my children for the school bus," he says, honest, quiet voice and calm before starting the conversation with Clarin.
You said you do not think in a solo career . Coldplay is very aware of egos.
Yes, and I think soloist. It is that we really need as a band. Together we are stronger. Of course they spend little things between us, some discussions, but the truth is that we like to be together. And extinct, if it occurs, one beside the other.
It is said that you're one of the most humble people in the musical mainstream . What things would you put your feet on the ground?
All the things that has given me life. The people I've ever met. Let's see, I have the feet on the ground every day, much more in this day ( this note was made the same day as the terrorist attack in Brussels) , when we see in the news abhorrent acts . We must be grateful to be here, to have another day on Earth . I feel like a new day is a new gift . I repeat , especially on this day . Today.
Of course , last year Coldplay did a version of "Imagine " after another terrorist attack in Paris. Now what happened in Brussels ...
Yes, I'm so sad. I feel the same way as anyone else. It is a tremendous tragedy, totally unexpected, as happened in Paris. I am totally confused again. I can not believe it has happened again.
Let's talk about music. Could you summarize in a few words color and your last two albums?
A Ghost Stories summarize it as gray, still and A Head Full of Dreams, of all colors, to hear blaring. Almost like listening to a group of heavy rock ... Although still that way, we have not gotten ...
Some critics said that your previous album, "Ghost Stories" was boring.
Since we started, we always had very negative reactions towards us. At first we generated some anxiety and confusion. We wondered why some people used such aggressive words. Brother, it's just music, if you do not like millions of other things to do. But then, eventually, I said to myself: 'If someone makes you happy writing negative comments towards our band, okay, no problem'. Now, we focus on people who make you happy with our music. Really we love what we do and we must accept that disagreeing is part of being human.
You pay attention to criticism, then.
Sometimes, occasionally. The truth is that I learned to deal with the media. Now I try not to worry too much.
How much influence your mood "Ghost Stories"? It was during your divorce Gwyneth Paltrow.
Yes. That album did in the midst of great personal change. That's why we make tours with big stadiums, not much promotion. In addition it would have been quite complicated ... My relationship had just ended. So we wanted to do something intimate, introspective, that speak for itself. It is a small album and what we try to do is to hear that he felt identified with him in some circumstances of his life. We did that music only for certain people, or family, listen and enjoy. The truth is that when we finished that album was a kind of final therapy session. We feel very well. And that time we decided that we would spend on tours it would devote fully to the new album. So we thought was A Head Full of Dreams.
A completely different to the previous disc. To silence criticism?
I do not think about that. The reality is that had a good time doing it. We do not worry ever about what people will say or what they might think. Just enjoy and make songs that really love. The truth is I'm happy for those songs, very grateful. Now we're psyched to play them live. I repeat, brother, I do not care what they say. I am happy to be that way.
It's just a very happy, danceable, with some disco and funk album. Was it your idea to go that way?
Yes, mine and everyone. Naturally we feel so, how the disc is played. We call our friends, Stargate (duo of renowned Norwegian producers, consisting of Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel S. Eriksen), and ask them to help us create the album and of course, they come from the pop world (they had made hits for Rihanna Beyoncé and Katy Perry, among others, met them a couple of years ago when he wrote a song for Beyoncé, called Hook Up, and so got into the studio with Stargate to test) so that brought a lot of new sounds . Everything went very naturally to find the sound we wanted.
Do you think the key to the new rock is back to electronic sound?
(Thinks) I do not consider music in terms of rock or pop or categories. Its music. I feel the music without words, without barriers. When you have fewer limits, the better. I think everything can be mixed. And for me, that's the key.
Will we listen to a more electronic Coldplay from now?
I do not know. We will see what we will do from now on. Right now we head on tour in your country. We are enjoying this stage. I do not think in futuristic terms. Some will. I do not.
They have many guests on the new album, even your ex-wife participates in a song.
Well, actually the album has 15 guests. Some are very famous, others not so much. And we chose because we felt like part of the family and also were nearby at the time. Actually, in my dreams, I think everyone would have to be on my album. Everyone is within the study. But that's pretty hard to do (laughs). Then we had to choose. My ... (corrects) Gwyneth appears in Everglow and sang on two lines ( "How come things move on / How come cars do not slow"), which gave me the idea ten years ago. ("Is there any chance to sing that part, because it's your idea," Chris said. "I can not, I'm not professional!" Said Paltrow, who finally did). Beyoncé appears on the album because, quite simply, is the best singer on earth. We wanted to put slower at the end of the album, talk of dreams to establish your ambitions and never leave issues. And there appears Noel Gallagher in Up & Up (the last song on the album). We found it more than adequate to have a hero of our childhood playing with us ... That was a dream come true.
Obama made between the world of music with a speech ... Did you have contact with him? How did they approved?
It is very relevant today after what happened in Europe. The President of the United States chose to sing Amazing Grace (legendary Christian hymn written by John Newton, Obama sang at the funeral of politician and American pastor Clementa Pinckney, who in an attack in June last year, died along with eight others in USA) and thought that speech has such a powerful message that we decided to include it in Kaleidoscope. I just loved it, so we asked if we could to sample and said yes ... I'm very happy that it has approved.
Reticent and shy to answer questions about his private life, Chris Martin confessed in a British medium, a time which was "a year of depression" after their friendly separation of Gwyneth Paltrow in 2014. It also makes the actress just say cover story of the magazine Glamour, Martin is like his "brother". As well they ended their relationship, which in the last Thanksgiving in the United States, Martin and Paltrow spent together as a family. The actress, 43, currently is paired with the director and television writer Brad Falchuk.
Martin, meanwhile, has been dating last year with another Hollywood superstar, Jennifer Lawrence. And now they awarded another romance, this time with an English actress named Anabelle Wallis, who incidentally, does vocals on the song Up & Up ... But, of course, the leader of Coldplay always manages to go unnoticed from curious radars and this time was no exception.
Although transpired that finally he and Paltrow signed the divorce five days ago, before the first question involving his ex and his new girlfriend, the answer is immediate: "Sorry, Martin, I have to go pick up my kids from school . Thank you very much". Over and out.
