I love both the new songs, but Another's Arms stuck in my head. I've only listened to them once but I feel like the songs really fit with the album's title. Both had a more ethereal sound then MX and Another's Arms has that wailing effect that, to me, is very ghostly. I'm with the group that instantly liekd these songs. They made the right choice showing us Midnight first. The other songs share basic similarities with it, but with Midnight it is to the extreme. I'm glad to see that Magic is a hit because there was definitely a risk of isolating mainstream fans with this album, but honestly I think this will be one of the band's best albums.

^Yeah after seeing Midnight live I have a whole new appreciation for it. I didn't know how they'd do it live but now I think it actually works better live then recorded. It made the song so much more powerful to me, especially with its placement as the encore.

I totally loved the new songs! I'm gonna try not to listen to them again until the album comes out, as I don't want to get spoiled but wow were they good! The new album seems to me to be a mix of going back to their roots while still atmospherically expanding their sound. Midnight stole the show for me I think. It was a really great encore, and different from there usual ones. Simplistic but powerful (plus, come on they had a laser harp!) The whole show just culminated in that chill, really ghostly moment. Really a great way to start up their live shows again!

I finally got a chance to hear Magic, and all I can say is that this is shaping up to be extremely different from any other Coldplay album to date. Not sure how I feel about the song so far (only had one listen), but I could definitely seeing myself liking it, even if it's not as immediately great as some of their other songs. That might be a theme with this album, as I felt the same about Midnight. The instrumentation is great, especially the bass. I've read some people say it's a little Damon Albarn-esque and I agree. Not sure how I feel about the electronic drum though. It's a minor critique but when the basses are too high on those it kind of bothers me and distracts from the song a little, but I'll probably get used to it.
It's interesting that "Ghost Stories" is only going to have 9 tracks. I thought MX was a little too short and I hope this album isn't. I personally hope we get some longer 2-in-1 songs like we had on Viva but who knows.
The band also seem really different so far this era, besides just musically. They actually seem more laid back with out any "uniform" and just springing these songs on us with little warning or prior media build up. Also, unless I'm missing something there's no color song on this album. So far, what we've heard so far is a mix of going back to their roots and going off of the electronic sounds they experimented with on MX. Magic seems to be reminiscent of Parachutes alternative tendencies, while also bearing a strong pop feel like that of MX.
So yeah, That's what I think so far. Definitely looking forward to this album

I love both the new songs. To me, they seem like a natural growth from where they were on No Line on the Horizon. The songs seem to be in a similar tone, while still managing to be different, which is great. Can't wait for the new album!

I'll probably go back and read the rest of this thread later cause I'm interested in what the rest of you think about this song. Coldplay have made some big musical jumps in the past (ARoBTTH to X&Y, VLV to MX) but this is a pretty huge one. They sound almost like a different band.
I have only listened to the song once so far, and on first impression I couldn't really "sing" the song to you. I don't really remember the song at all, but rather just the sound or style of it. I actually love that sound. It's so incredibly indie and to me is kind of close to what people have been asking for: a "serious" sounding Coldplay. While this song may not really stand out for me, I could totally see where Coldplay could go with this sound, mixing it with more melodic vibes, sort of like they did with the folk influences of Viva La Vida. I do not think this song will be a hit, and perhaps, if a strong lead in single is not released, this may be their first album not to debut at number 1. That being said, if this album is done right Coldplay have a real shot at bringing this kind of music to the mainstream. However, I do not think sales or popularity is what Coldplay are going for with "midnight". While part of it may be proving themselves as artists, showing they can do fun sing-along mainstream tunes and darker electronic indie stuff, I think really Coldplay are just doing the kind of music they want to do. And that's awesome. I may not be sure how I feel about the songs heavily electronic vibe, lack of guitar, and muffled electro-vocals, but I'm definitely excited to see they're discovering themselves yet again. And that is what makes great musicians. No matter what form their sound might take, it's always good to have Coldplay back.

So...Am I in the right place? I haven't been active lately but I went online and realized the forum was gone! Glad to see this little underground is emerging.
