I'm currently trying to finish two books: One is The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt which is an amazing coming of age story. The other is Carol (The price of salt) of Patricia Highsmith. I have heard good things about The Goldfinch but unfortunately I have yet to read it. I will have to find time. A while back I read Ian Rankin's first book. I have missed the bus somewhat considering it was published in the 80s… but better late than never I suppose. It was very good though, particularly for a debut novel. The ending was quite abrupt but then I think it fits. I am also quite far through All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, which is beautifully written and wonderful and I never want it to end, but fortunately it's quite long

Still an enjoyable read overall. I believe i have the second book you mentioned on my to-read list in goodreads. I will search more about the first one and probably add it.

I admire all of you that primarily use ebooks and kindle. I just haven't been able to get into those, I need the book and my hand to enjoy the read.

I admire all of you that are even reading! I think the longest thing I've read lately is a magazine. Time is running short these days, and it puts me right to sleep at night. I find myself reading the same paragraph over and over and over... haha

I have the Goldfinch on my nightstand, have not started it yet. I read the FSOG books my hygienist loaned me, it took me about a week for all three, and I've finished three other books since then, all chiclit books.

Nothing wrong with a bit of chiclit . I have to admit I LOVE the kindle/ibooks, you can read them anywhere, I mostly read on my phone, so say you are stuck in a line at the post office, well out comes the phone.. and you can catch up on a chapter.. it's brilliant. Most of these apps have the real experience type thing, the page actually flips, you can change the lighting, text size, whatever to suit, and the good thing is you can read in the total dark, so nobody has to be woken up if you can't sleep. You can tell, I am a convert. Also for me the real best bit is you don't have to STORE huge numbers of books on your bookshelves taking up space.

I recently finished Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. Romance isn't usually my thing, but I did enjoy it if only because it's an interesting insight into 19th-century society.

I'm thinking you should read To Kill A Mockingbird first. From what I hear the second book is a pretty direct continuation of the first.
I just read a fantastic book called The Age Of Miracles. Very poignant and beautiful, I couldn't put it down. Basically, it's about a series of natural disasters that eventually brings about the end of the world and how it affects everyone's lives as all the changes in the earth slowly take place. It's really good.

Anybody have any recommendations for a series or trilogy? If you like historical fiction, Ken Follet's Fall of Giants, Winter of the World, and the Edge of Eternity are very good. I couldn't put them down, but a warning, the books are very long.
