Chris Martin calls for shared parental leave to be extended for producers and roadies by Adam Sherwin
Wednesday, January 3, 2018Chris Martin has called for Shared Parental Pay Benefit to be extended to the self-employed to help roadies and other crew members who work in the music industry. “So many of our crew, both in the studio and on the road, are freelance, and we don’t want to lose half of that talent when they become parents.” Chris Martin, the Coldplay singer, backed a campaign to extend Shared Parental Pay to all self-employed parents. Around 44% of people who work in the creative industries are freelancers. But the current system of Maternity Allowance for the self-employed effectively places the burden of childcare on the mother. Nothing for self-employed fathers or same-sex parents Self-employed fathers and adopters currently get nothing and there is no provision for same-sex parents wishing to share childcare. Martin told the i: “So many of our crew, both in the studio and on the road, are freelance, and we don’t want to lose half of that talent when they become parents – we want them to be able to to share their parenting in a way that works for them, and isn’t dictated by being a man or a woman.” Freelance crew keeps Coldplay on the road A small army of lighting and sound engineers, road managers, caterers, drivers, merchandise sellers, pyrotechnic experts and instrument technicians keeps Coldplay’s globe-straddling tours on the road. Martin, singer-songwriter Laura Marling and and Tom Chaplin, the former Keane frontman, have signed a letter written by Olga FitzRoy, an award-winning sound engineer, backed by the Music Producers Guild, calling for ministers to extend Shared Parental Pay. Business minister Margot James has committed to a review of Shared Parental Leave policy this year. Ms FitzRoy wrote: “The current regulations are based on the 1950s model of the family where the mother does all the caring. In the creative industries 44% are self-employed and most of us love our jobs – we don’t want to choose between family and career, and with shared parental pay we wouldn’t have to.” “It would be paid at exactly the same rate as maternity allowance for the same no of weeks, but parents could share the leave flexibly and women’s careers would suffer less, while new dads and adopters, who currently get nothing, could bond with their kids. Everyone’s a winner and we envisage the cost to be minimal.” link

There was no sign of his love interest when he was spotted walking on the beach with a male pal in Malibu, California, on Tuesday morning. But Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson were nearly inseparable that evening at the launch party for Stella McCartney’s fall 2018 fashion collection at S.I.R. Studios in Hollywood. 'Dakota and Chris were super affectionate with each other,' an onlooker dished to Us Weekly. 'She was whispering in his ear, rubbing his back and was super smiley. She seemed happy to be there with him.' The Fifty Shades actress, 28, and the Coldplay frontman, 40, 'never really left each other’s side or stopped holding hands,' during the evening, according to the eyewitness. The duo held hands again as they left the event through an exit near the back of the building. The bash was also attended by stars including Olivia Munn, Paris Jackson, Vanessa Hudgens, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. The couple have become more public about their relationship since November when Dakota jetted to Argentina to see Chris play in one of Coldplay's final tour shows. They then traveled to Israel. And in December they kissed and canoodled on the beach in Malibu. Chris shares daughter Apple, 13, and son Moses, 11, with ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow. The couple were married from 2003 to 2016.
