From an interview with musician Rae Morris: “During a formative writing trip in Los Angeles, her record company even hooked her up with Chris Martin, in the hope that he might help to steer her in the right direction.
' Oh, I was sick, I felt that nervous,' she recalls at the prospect of meeting the singer. Martin, who was living in LA, had just flown in from London but headed directly to the studio rather than back to Gwyneth. 'I knew he was needed at home, yet here he was, listening to my demos, offering constructive feedback. He was so sweet, so kind to me.'
His influence was evident throughout Unguarded. The songs on her first album were largely mournful, piano-led and introspective. Several tracks concerned the relationship she was in at the time, which was with a woman. This brought an all-too-predictable media interest in the then-23-year-old. 'Morris had never anticipated becoming a role model for the LGBT community, she says, 'but if me being bisexual meant that my songs connected with people who might have been going through the same issues, then wonderful. That whole album was me finding out who I was. Looking back, I realise I didn’t really know. I certainly wasn’t ready for success. But I am now.'
Yet ambition, she says, has always been bubbling away beneath what might have seemed to others a fragile surface. 'Oh, even when I was riddled with self-doubt, I still had ambition. I remember watching Coldplay play stadiums, and I just wanted to be where they were. I would watch them and think to myself: why doesn’t Chris Martin know who I am! I just wanted him to know that I existed. He does now.'"link |
