So I'm currently in college. I'm going to a Community college and plan to transfer to a four year after a few years and major in some degree. I'm not sure what yet though. My friend and I have (un)officially started a band. It's just he and I so far. He has been playing guitar for a very long time. He has his own little man cave/studio in another room in his house with the whole sound proof walls and stuff. He's majoring in music, that's cool follow your dreams. However I don't think a degree in music is going to pay the bills. We both dream of being musicians and having a band and playing music, doing what we love. Although I am not ready to just risk it all. I'd much rather practice guitar, piano, singing, etc while in school. Get a BA degree, then after that try and see if our music can take us anywhere. I'm just wondering if this is the best route to take? I'm almost 100 % sure this is the safest and best way to take but wouldn't mind asking for advice. I know I'm not the greatest guitar/piano/singer at my age. I know, but as the saying goes, "Find a job you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life". Or in this case, a hobby. It is a hobby at this point, but I'd like it to be so much more. I'm afraid of what other people will think when I say this is what I want to do. It seems like these days, only the big talented people who are 1 out of 1,000,000 make it. I'm kind of ranting on at this bit, so I do apologize. One last question, If someone is an alright/decent(ish)/not good not bad kinda singer, will their voice even out and mature over time and help them sing better with correct and proper technique? I feel like I'm getting a little better with singing, can't hit low notes to save my life, or really high notes for that matter. I'm going to stop ranting now, have a nice day!

I think you should do what you feel is best for you and your career, whether or not it's the best/safest route. If I was in your position, honestly, I would stick with the "safe" route, but that's just me, and you should also get other people's opinions on this. Music is obviously your passion, so you should pursue it now, and not worry too much about what will happen in the long run. (I'm not saying drop out of college and completely focus on music however, that wouldn't benefit you much) You shouldn't worry about what other people think, but I think you have an amazing voice already, and with time & practice it will improve! [Sorry if this is s**t advice, I'm not very good when it comes to helping other people out] Good luck!

This sounds a lot like four other lads that went to college but had a passion for music. They met, became friends, created a band together, practiced a lot and played gigs - all while going to school. Eventually, through hard work, and some luck, they were able to get a deal to play music for a living once they completed their degrees. It all depends on the amount of dedication and desire you have to make it happen. I do agree, however, that it seems difficult to make it in the music biz, and it appears that these lads that we all love maybe thought the same way as most completed their degrees before embarking on the amazing career that has changed people's lives. Personally, it would be hard to put aside the logical part of my brain and not get a degree in something as a fall back, but too many people don't try for their dreams because of that exact logic and end up regretting it. If these four lads could do it, maybe you could too. You certainly do seem to have quite a talent. As for the second question, I'm sure practice will help, and I'm sure time will help as well to mature your voice. Even Chris enlisted the help of a voice coach, so that is a possibility. Good luck!!!

I'm on my ipod so forgive me for not quoting both of you. I'm not quite sure how to. Thank you so much. Sometimes talking to others is the best thing to do. Takes another's opinions to see straight. Four guys from UL than go on to be the biggest band in the world! Who would have guessed? Haha. I guess anything is possible.
