A FROME family’s ‘Loom-band-athon’ has raised over £2,500 for the charity Save the Children – with help from the world-famous rock band Coldplay.
The colourful rubber loom bands are woven together to make bracelets and necklaces, and are 2014’s playground craze.
Susan Ford and her three children Issy, Henry, and Rudy, are building a giant loom band at a rate of 24 feet a day for 31 days throughout August.
Issy, aged nine, came up with the idea after hearing that one child dies every hour as a result of the conflicts in Gaza and Syria. The idea is that at the end of the summer holiday, there will be a foot of loom band to commemorate every child who lost their life.
Susan said, “It’s been a really positive experience, and the fundraising has far exceeded expectations.”
The children’s JustGiving page has received over 45 donations, including a surprise donation of £2,000 from Coldplay, which came with the simple message, ‘Well done for this great idea, Love Coldplay.’
The band, who have sold over 80 million copies worldwide, are renowned for their philanthropy. In March this year they donated £260,000 to Jo Whiley’s Sport Relief fundraiser, and more recently contributed £10,000 to a terminally ill fan raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Susan estimates that the family have bought over 6,000 of the bands so far, and will need to stock up further before the band – which is set to be 744 feet long – is finished, but she’s confident it’s worth it.
She said, “There’s something really poignant about children raising money for other children, and it’s educating them about global affairs at the same time.”
