Also, this sounds like a Hopkins-Coldpay colaboration It IS a Hopkins-Coldpay colaboration. I was waiting for Will and Jonny to kick in at the end but it never happened!

I LOVE IT. It sounds new for them, it's fresh, it's bold. I love when artists take risks and they are so talented. This is better than what I expected. I love this dark electronic sound.

Jon Hopkins instantly popped up in my mind when I first listened to Midnight. I have not the best ears and my english is bad, lol. This is what I heard at first.
"In the darkness, before dawn In the swirling, of the storm
Running round and without punches and hope is gone Leave a light, a light on
Near the answer (...) from home In the swirling, I'm swimming on
Running drowning within thunder that blew full force Leave a light a light on, leave a light a light on
In the darkess before the dawn Leave a light a light on"

Ok, first of all, I'm super hyped.
Secondly, guys, seriously, stop complaining about the auto-tune. There are places where auto-tune shows a lack of skill and creativity (as if to hide the fact that a particular singer isn't actually that great at singing--ahem, see every Disney star, ever), and there are other moments, where auto-tune is a decision made by the artist to help build on the overall sound that is in the instrumental. Think of Chris's voice as a fourth instrument. He's not tarnishing the song, or doing a disservice to the fans if he uses auto-tune. And besides, it fits with the obvious electronic nature of the song.
On first listen, I was confused.... I mean, it never really built up to anything and the song had no resolve. But that's GOOD. Coldplay's music is much to predictable, as far as song structure is concerned. I'm glad that this song didn't have any obvious, loud climax, just for the sake of making it more exciting or uplifting (ie Atlas).
Do I like the song? I have NO IDEA. But I love what they're doing so far. Restraint. Restraint is what I'm looking for in LP6. That way, when there actually is an explosive moment, it'll mean more.
I'm seeing really strong influences in this song. I'm feeling some Radiohead, Avicii, Bon Iver, and XXYYXX. The latter artist, by the way, was featured in one of Chris's tweets about a year ago when he shared "what he was listening to."
If Midnight is a major indicator of where LP6 is going, I'd say I'm pretty impressed because this, I feel, is true experimentation. We thought MX was experimental.... no no no. THIS is experimenting, Coldplay. Cudos.

according to this website, video was filmed in Los Angeles Coldplay Drops Surprise Single and Video, ‘Midnight’
February 25, 2014 11:10 am Beyonce has clearly rubbed off on her good friend Chris Martin … because on Tuesday at midnight, his band Coldplay dropped new music on their unsuspecting fans. The single, “Midnight,” debuted on VEVO in a simple black-and-white video that depicts the band wandering (and dancing) around a forest, just steps from what looks like a wolf, as well as cityscape shots of Los Angeles. Although Coldplay hasn’t released any info beyond the song, “Midnight” will likely appear on their upcoming sixth album. link

What if Midnight is actually a B-side for a future single? TheY called it just a "new song", and it really doesn't sound commercial at all like a single should be... just a thought I really hope this is the case, Midnight is decent, but too ambient to be the first single.

It is ambient, for sure. A sensible track to put at the half way point of an album perhaps??

I love the dark-ambient quality to the song, but I'm still not digging the auto-tuned tone to Chris' voice, (though I don't mind it nearly as much as other artists, probably because it's Chris haha). I totally agree with your point about restraint though. I think they really went overboard on MX with all the group choruses and explosive endings. And yeah, THIS is definitely Coldplay experimenting, MX was more Coldplay becoming radio-friendly haha

Haunting is a good word to describe it. It reminds me a lot of the work that Chris did with Faultline, like this one:

In the darkness, before dawn In the swirling, of the storm Running rolling with the punches and hope is gone, Leave a light, a light on Millions are miles from home in the swirlin, swimmin on runnin, rollin with the thunder bleed from thorns leave a light, the light on Sorry for shamelessly self-bumping my own post, but here's what I heard :P

It feels like a placeholder to me. I think it will be either at the beginning of the album or at the end. I don't think this is technically the new single and I don't think we have anything to worry about as far as the sound of LP6 is concerned.

OMG Ok so my first impression of the song is that it's the perfect night time roadtrip song. Like omg. Yes. I love love the music. It is beautiful. I can't work out all the lyrics yet but I really like "Leave the light, the light on". I think it's really bold of them to release this as a first track (maybe not an actual single), as a first taste of LP6. Their first release always shows how amazingly capable they are of reinventing themselves. That's what they're saying here. Damn, Jon Hopkins and Coldplay, such collaboration always give great results it seems! For those who don't like it and might be worried of not enjoying the album: don't panic! I highly doubt this reflects the sound of the full album. I see it as an intro or perhaps the last track. Or a transition. But I don't think the whole album will sound like that. I really like the track, it's beautiful, but as it was pointed out, it is quite ambient. LP6 won't be a full-on ambient album.

Unsuspecting? They don't know the fans of Coldplay very well.

Time to write at least an attempt to a review. From the first listen I really liked it. Its very different from everything in MX era and that is the first reason why I liked it so much. To me its really dark with some twisted light to it. I think Guy is finally doing something he likes, cause it has an Apparatjik sound to it. I'm really happy that they moved from pop, I was sooo afraid that this might go in PoC direction and that would be it for me. Although its not really radio friendly song and might not actually be a single I hope that the album will go somewhere in this direction. Dark, twisted, X&Y-y but something with what the boys are happy about and proud of. But I'm really glad that they are doing something new, and different but again old Coldplay like.

Certainly different.. I don't not like it. I hated Mylo Xyloto at first, but in time it became one of my favorite albums. I'm definitely happy that they're experimenting with all the new sounds! Minus the auto-tune..:S
