Ok, first of all, I'm super hyped. Secondly, guys, seriously, stop complaining about the auto-tune. There are places where auto-tune shows a lack of skill and creativity (as if to hide the fact that a particular singer isn't actually that great at singing--ahem, see every Disney star, ever), and there are other moments, where auto-tune is a decision made by the artist to help build on the overall sound that is in the instrumental. Think of Chris's voice as a fourth instrument. He's not tarnishing the song, or doing a disservice to the fans if he uses auto-tune. And besides, it fits with the obvious electronic nature of the song. On first listen, I was confused.... I mean, it never really built up to anything and the song had no resolve. But that's GOOD. Coldplay's music is much to predictable, as far as song structure is concerned. I'm glad that this song didn't have any obvious, loud climax, just for the sake of making it more exciting or uplifting (ie Atlas). Do I like the song? I have NO IDEA. But I love what they're doing so far. Restraint. Restraint is what I'm looking for in LP6. That way, when there actually is an explosive moment, it'll mean more. I'm seeing really strong influences in this song. I'm feeling some Radiohead, Avicii, Bon Iver, and XXYYXX. The latter artist, by the way, was featured in one of Chris's tweets about a year ago when he shared "what he was listening to." If Midnight is a major indicator of where LP6 is going, I'd say I'm pretty impressed because this, I feel, is true experimentation. We thought MX was experimental.... no no no. THIS is experimenting, Coldplay. Cudos. I love the dark-ambient quality to the song, but I'm still not digging the auto-tuned tone to Chris' voice, (though I don't mind it nearly as much as other artists, probably because it's Chris haha). I totally agree with your point about restraint though. I think they really went overboard on MX with all the group choruses and explosive endings. And yeah, THIS is definitely Coldplay experimenting, MX was more Coldplay becoming radio-friendly haha This really puts my argument into words quite nicely: What hit us the hardest is Chris Martin's robotic vocals. The frontman's tone has become ubiquitous in modern soft rock, but 'Midnight' hears it distorted, with any hint of recognition gently drifting away further into the darkness. It's probably a nod to the track's namesake, primed to make the vocal effect waft around the song so you don't really know which direction it's coming from. You're almost blind to where the track is going to go next.link

It feels like a placeholder to me. I think it will be either at the beginning of the album or at the end. I don't think this is technically the new single and I don't think we have anything to worry about as far as the sound of LP6 is concerned. Theres a lot of confusion surrounding the song because of this. We need to know what it represents! 02:20 onward is breathtaking. Reminds me of M83!

This is a big surprise! Not expecting it at all. I think it's a grower but I already know this album is going to be way better than MX

02:20 onward is breathtaking. Very much agreed. I think that's the most 'Coldplay sounding' part of the entire song. I don't really know whether to call it a song; to me it seems more like a collection of nice sounds that come together and make something AMAZING! I just know now that it'll soundtrack many sleepless nights…

Well, I don't think I will add anything new, all of it was posted before... I was surprised, or rather shocked at first. I thought "Has anyone stolen their guitars?" I know it's probably my fault not theirs, I'm a bit conservative and I've always listened to anything to do with rock music, never liked anything electronic... I know I should be more open-minded but electronics just never was my cup of tea. Of course, I won't give up on Coldplay, I will support them throught the thick and the thin as Chris used to say... Maybe this will help me become more open to different genres. As I'm listening to it on repeat, the song is growing on me. The only thing I cannot forgive them is what they've done to Chris' voice. I'm really curious how the song will sound live... I

It's surprising how they haven't given any information on this song. No press release, no tweet giving background info, nothing much in the YouTube description either.

Well, at first I thought that I will hate Midnight all my life. I was like "Electro? Really? What the heck?". But I listened to this song a little more times and now I think this is new, great track. I absolutely love their new style, but also I understood that I miss Mylo era already. Coldplay is Coldplay, they are who they are. Just four amazing and talented musicians.

Like the sound... hate the song. The best Coldplay songs start out quiet and then build to an intense part (Atlas, Moving to Mars), so I kept waiting for the intense part... never happened. If this is the sound they're going for on their new album, then it could be good with other songs... just not this one. One of the rare times that Coldplay has disappointed me.

Coldplay Ease Into Chilly New Track 'Midnight'The group premiered the video at midnight, Mongolia time By KORY GROW FEBRUARY 25, 2014 1:45 PMWith zero context, Coldplay have released a new song, "Midnight." The group has yet to announce a new album or any other release for 2014, and their only concert on the calendar so far is an appearance during South by Southwest. Instead, they simply tweeted that "something new" would happen at midnight in the time zone local to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia – and now that they have released the video for "Midnight," it seems even more shrouded in mystery. The clip is dark and chilly, full of black-and-white photo-negative images and what looks like heat-sensitive silhouettes of Coldplay's members ambling through a forest. The song itself is just as chilly. A far cry from the anthemic chorus of their most recent track, "Atlas," which doubled as their contribution to the Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack, "Midnight" is one of the group's most understated singles. For four minutes, the band maintains a slow pulse highlighted by shimmering synthesizers that have more in common with downtempo EDM than Coldplay's piano rock. Frontman Chris Martin intones heavily affected vocals that, at times, resemble early Nineties Peter Gabriel as he sings about darkness, while the synths build throughout the track before a skittery, rave-like keyboard line flits about noisy static. The track closes with Martin asking that a light be left on. Maybe somewhere deep within the effects-heavy murk of his more incoherent lyrics is something that explains just why the song came out at a time local to Ulaanbaatar. link

I'll probably go back and read the rest of this thread later cause I'm interested in what the rest of you think about this song. Coldplay have made some big musical jumps in the past (ARoBTTH to X&Y, VLV to MX) but this is a pretty huge one. They sound almost like a different band.
I have only listened to the song once so far, and on first impression I couldn't really "sing" the song to you. I don't really remember the song at all, but rather just the sound or style of it. I actually love that sound. It's so incredibly indie and to me is kind of close to what people have been asking for: a "serious" sounding Coldplay. While this song may not really stand out for me, I could totally see where Coldplay could go with this sound, mixing it with more melodic vibes, sort of like they did with the folk influences of Viva La Vida. I do not think this song will be a hit, and perhaps, if a strong lead in single is not released, this may be their first album not to debut at number 1. That being said, if this album is done right Coldplay have a real shot at bringing this kind of music to the mainstream. However, I do not think sales or popularity is what Coldplay are going for with "midnight". While part of it may be proving themselves as artists, showing they can do fun sing-along mainstream tunes and darker electronic indie stuff, I think really Coldplay are just doing the kind of music they want to do. And that's awesome. I may not be sure how I feel about the songs heavily electronic vibe, lack of guitar, and muffled electro-vocals, but I'm definitely excited to see they're discovering themselves yet again. And that is what makes great musicians. No matter what form their sound might take, it's always good to have Coldplay back.

I have so much to say about this! First, I haven't really decided if I like it or not (ok, I'm not a fan of the voice, but I get that leaving Chris' voice alone wouldn't give it this "atmosphere-y vibe"). But there's a lot I can talk about. Ok, so... This feels so Apparajik-like (and that's good). Since they posted the first gif I remember thinking that it reminded me of Apparatjik; the second gif reminded me even more of them; and when I saw the video I couldn't think about anything else. Which brings me to my next point: clearly we are seeing Guy getting more involved with everything. And it's exciting to guess how much his (or the other's) influence is going to be on LP6. I like the direction to where this is going. I think MX got my attention for the wrong reasons, but this, on the other hand, made me really curious. Coldplay you officially have my attention for LP6. Yes! x1000 Edit: I forgot to add: I'm very curious of how this is going to play off live (if they are playing it on SWSX)
