^^ actually i think what they have been doing lately shows that they actually don't mind not being cool. they have been braver in terms of the music styles they want to explore. whether it is for the good or the bad is of course subjective. to me it seems like they are still very driven, want to be the big band they are (almost thought otherwise with midnight) and want to be relevant (all the current mainstream sound influences). we should remember that chris once said that he loves katy perry's last friday almost as much as something by radiohead (can't remember the song). so they obviously still want to straddle that line. but it became more obvious with mylo and now it seems maybe ghost stories (going by magic). and that move would not be taken by a band wanting to be cool.
also regarding chris' writing skills, i agree with you to a certain degree. i was listening to pandora yesterday and amsterdam from live 2003 came up. just listening to it after listening to magic earlier in the day shows the incredible difference in mainly the feelings that the songs evoke. made me a little sad actually. just to clarify, i love midnight and appreciate magic for what it is and i admire the band for changing it up. with the two songs we have right now, i hope the album would be more psychedelic and left-field (more midnight than magic). and it would suit the overall theme apparently they are going to this time around, with no interviews or crazy marketing.

They can only write what they feel, right? X&Y and AROBBTH were angsty because they were. If the band is happy and in love (or sees those circumstances around them) they will write about it.
I see Magic as more of a whimsical song, and in a way it appeals to both the new "puppy love", as well as with reaffirming the bond with the one you love and recognizing you have been in love with them the same way for a long time.

I honestly don't listen to Coldplay songs for the lyrics. Chris could sing the phone book with Jonny as backup and I'd be cool with that. It seems like Magic is the married Chris' version of Yellow. I like the cool chilled out vibe of Magic and I like Chris' singing on it, so I'm not too worried. I hope there's some meatier music going on in the album. The sound is always the best part of Coldplay for me. I thought of Yellow while listening to Magic too. It's pretty much a love song. The first thing I thought was "who did Chris have in mind while writing this?"

I'll elaborate to say that the groove of Magic makes me think it's a rediscovery of love song, as if, hey, we are still together and here's why. For me, Yellow was about the feeling you get when you are newly in love--it helped that it came out when I was getting engaged to my husband and it's a nice reminder of that time in my life.

I agree with all of you. I love it because it is a HAPPY song about love. Rather than a sad one. I would hate to think of Chris being hurt or unhappy in order to write good songs, you know?
However, I feel that this is a going back a little again. He is singing about himself once more. From the 'Story' in MX, the characters and their journey. Which whilst it was pretty cool, I kind of felt stopped it being quite so personal quite so connected. This song is personal and I love it.

First of all, I really love the lyrics! Yes, it's a song about love. Sometimes love evokes complex feelings and sometimes it doesn't. Here the feelings are expressed in a simple way, that's true, but it sounds authentic to me and that's what counts. I personally prefer lyrics that are personal, rather than lyrics like in some of MX's songs, it's easier for me to relate to lyrics like Magic or even Midnight.
Chris has always said that they start with the music, I think the lyrics are secondary but never neglected. For me, they sound honest, and that's what's important. I've always thought that Chris is good at writing about emotions, and why should it be high poetry? It's supposed to be about the music together with the lyrics as a whole.
However, I would also love if he could just stop a little bit with the 'ooooh ooooooh ooooh's in the songs, I know it's good to sing live, but it's just a little bit too much sometimes.

I feel Chris and the band are the kings of mood. I love how a song can start out small, so to speak--like Swallowed in the Sea--and then slowly become big and loud. There are so many of their songs that do this. Their music for me sets a mood, and the emotion of the song is so much more important to me than trying to decipher lyrics.

I think Ghost Stories will have something to please both sides of Coldplay fandom: those who like complicated lyrics (Midnight) and those who like simple and straight forward lyrics (Magic)
