Multi-quoting because I'm home alone on a Saturday night, so you guys are my only company...
But ASFOS fits largely the same audience as most of MX. I think a song like Midnight would be a better candidate to reach other listeners. Or even Another's Arms with it's weird noises.
Yeah it's diverse, but it's also like they decided to make a low-key album and then didn't stick to the plan. That's probably not the way it went, but it is the way it feels to me.
Well, if they really need a jumpy song, they could have done it differently. I remember being at Rock Werchter and everyone started dancing like crazy when they played Shiver. It was the highlight of the evening.
But it's fine, they wanted to do this and people love it. I will probably dance to it if I'm in a fantastic mood or if I ever experience it live, but for now it's not really my cup of coffee. (Not much of a tea person.)
I don't know, it's weird to see the piano play itself while Chris has his hands free. If he uses an instrument it feels more like a 'band' effort, you know? It would make more sense if he played the guitar, or even the triangle...
Oh yeah I'm all for that. I think the way he approaches music is admirable. I am not bothered if he says One Direction are great, for example. Admitting that means he's the ultimate music fan. He's not bound by genres or by what is cool.
No I agree completely, they need to do new things. I loved Midnight from the first listen and I hoped there'd be more experimental songs. ASFOS could also be an experiment but the problem is, so many artists are doing the same thing, working with a DJ. So it might be new for Coldplay, it's not new to my ears, if that makes sense.
Edit: this was my 42nd post! I can never post anything else now.
I am tottally getting what you mean. Maybe, and now I am guessing, they are trying to explore other things to add a new group of fans. As a band you want to bring your music to a large audience. Maybe this a way of trying to do that more?

But besides that I like the fact this album is diverse. The 'old' fans will find songs they like, the fans from the MX era will find songs they like and ASFOS could make some new fans....

They may not need hits, but they DO need a song that gets people up and jumping at gigs. It's so much part of who they are. I know they have others that do that, but at least one on this record is needed. I think anyway. It's a happy song and I love it.

Why Chris can't sit and play? I guess he just wants to dance. He has said before that he likes the songs he can just sing with a microphone the best to perform live. The non-piano playing doesn't bother me, because we all know Chris CAN play it. Plus I just like to see him dance.

Chris likes SO very many types of music, he's really open to any kind of sound, I think it's a good thing.

As much as we the fans say, "Oh, I want another Parachutes" or "How about another Rush of Blood to the Head," would we really want the same album spun out over and over? I think Coldplay would have been a flash in the pan a long time ago if we got one kind of album, over and over.
