It's a good EDM song, but not sure I hear the Coldplay in it, except for Chris's voice.. I like it, but feel like they missed a chance at making it more their own, maybe by letting Avicii take over. If it weren't for Jonny, I might think it was a Chris solo project, lol. But I do like the live version. (And I LOVE that people aren't tearing each other apart over it, as is happening elsewhere on the interwebs! )

I just got the email telling me ASFOS is available to download on iTunes. It's early but I'm not complaining.

This is going to be in my head all day again now. It's actually growing on me more the more I listen to it. I was trying not to because I wanted to heard in in context with the album, but I give up, they are playing it on the radio, on TV, it's everywhere. It's now in my computer.

^ I know! Surprised that it rocketed up to number one right away and is still there! My impression of the song initially was that Chris' vocals were great but the song would be much better suited with an instrumentation less predictable/repetitive. I hope they release an acoustic but I still have to watch the live performance, which I read people seem to enjoy more. After seeing the Zane Lowe interview though and how Chris describes this song in the context of the album I can appreciate it more for what it is. After watching that interview I need the album NOW!!! 16 days is too long edit: didn't notice earlier but Ghost Stories is now no.1 on the albums chart for US as well! I guess this song is making quite an impact.

I am sorry to say that I think they picked hit potential over creating an interesting song on ASFOS. I don't like how predictable it is. I think they're forcing happiness and it doesn't convince me.
However, it does have a pretty melody, so I'd love to hear an acoustic version someday. I don't think it needs the EDM fuss at all.
I would also appreciate it if Chris sat at the piano while performing this song. Why let a computer do it if you can do it yourself?

I don't know. After the interview with Zane I have a whole other view to the album. I don't think ASFOS is written directly to become a hit.
I do think that they realised during the process that it could be a hit.
Bands like Coldplay needs hits. If they don't have hits, they wont sell. If they don't sell, they can't continue.
But like you said, I would love to here an acoustic version. That could be wonderful.
I personally like the song. It's catchy and very powerful. I get what the message is saying.

^It might not be written to be a hit initially, but they did make choices that will guarantee it's a hit. I feel like that was at the expense of the song's artistic potential. (Sorry for this pretentious sentence, can't express it any other way.) The rest of the album is subtle and feels genuine, I even appreciate Magic these days.
Well, I don't think they actually need hits. Any starting artist does, but a band this successful could afford an album that doesn't work on radio. But I think what you mean is, that's not the way they work. That's fine, I like them because they're easy on the ears.
What I'm trying to say is, they will have hits anyway. I really don't think they need a song like this to make sure that happens.
I don't mean to drag anyone down by the way. I'm happy for those who enjoy this song.

No, it's fine. We don't have to agree with everyone. It's nice to have discussions like this!
I am tottally getting what you mean. Maybe, and now I am guessing, they are trying to explore other things to add a new group of fans. As a band you want to bring your music to a large audience. Maybe this a way of trying to do that more?
But besides that I like the fact this album is diverse. The 'old' fans will find songs they like, the fans from the MX era will find songs they like and ASFOS could make some new fans....

I agree with Prissie. However when I first heard ASFOS I wasn't convinced like you Imke, I thought, what this is nothing like the other songs, why do they need Avici? But it has grown on me, more and more and more and seeing the live version at Jools Holland made me appreciate that this song, like a lot of others they do is SO much better live, it has so much energy and fun. Now it is permanently stuck in my head! They may not need hits, but they DO need a song that gets people up and jumping at gigs. It's so much part of who they are. I know they have others that do that, but at least one on this record is needed. I think anyway. It's a happy song and I love it. Why Chris can't sit and play? I guess he just wants to dance. He has said before that he likes the songs he can just sing with a microphone the best to perform live. The non-piano playing doesn't bother me, because we all know Chris CAN play it. Plus I just like to see him dance.

Chris likes SO very many types of music, he's really open to any kind of sound, I think it's a good thing. As much as we the fans say, "Oh, I want another Parachutes" or "How about another Rush of Blood to the Head," would we really want the same album spun out over and over? I think Coldplay would have been a flash in the pan a long time ago if we got one kind of album, over and over. For the record, I really like ASFOS. It's hugely catchy, I'm not so worried it doesn't sound like Coldplay to people, it does to me. It'll be great for my walking workouts!
