Untitled I am here and I have just realised that I still don't have a title for this! {Chapter 4}The phone rang.
Guy pulled himself up from his awkward sleeping position on the bed, and immediately noticed the strong stench of alcohol emanating from his clothes. He reached over for his house phone, which was on the bedside table.
“Guy?” It was Jonny.
“Yes?” he replied, his voice cracked and dry.
“Where are you? I've been ringing your mobile for ten minutes now?”
“Oh, I lost my phone, sorry.”
“Aren't you coming to The Bakery?”
“What?”
“The Bakery?” said Jonny, louder than before. “Yes… right… ten minutes.”
Guy ended the call and placed the phone back on the table.
--------------------
Before he knew it, he was back outside. The park was unusually quiet. To be honest, it was unusual that the park was there at all, since he didn't often come this way to The Bakery. Not that anyone wanted to be in the park on a day like today. Morning dew collected on the tip of every blade of grass; the trees were damp with the night's rainfall.
Guy let his mind wander for a minute. His legs felt weak and shaky, but at present it did not bother him. Several times he thought of running somewhere and never coming back. Several times he had to remind himself of his responsibilities. Several times he breathed a sigh of despair.
His feet slowly dragging, he eventually reached his destination, pushing open the door with a kind of reluctance that he could've easily mistaken for laziness.
“Guy!”
“Will…”
“Hurry up, Chris wants to record!”
Guy started walking quicker, picking up his bass (which felt lighter, and therefore less familiar).
The song was recorded. He did it idly, more as a distraction from his thoughts than a task in itself. His head was spinning all day. He didn't really care what colour of confetti they were using on the next tour, not now — he had bigger things on his mind. Couldn't they see that? Of course not. But they wouldn't believe him anyway. It all felt so distant now.
“What do you think, Guy? Where is the best place to put the confetti cannons?” asked Phil.
Guy hesitated. “I think they worked well on the last tour.”
“Really?” said Jonny, surprised. “I think they need to move a couple of metres forwards.”
“Oh, ok then. That's fine with me,” Guy replied.
“Well that's that decided,” said Phil. “We'll move them. And I think that's everything we need to sort out for now…”
Guy left as quickly as possible.
The pavement greeted him outside, the wind hitting his face.
“Did you not sleep last night, or what?” Chris said, catching him up.
“No,” Guy said suddenly.
“Ok then. You just seem different today.”
“So do you.”
“What?”
“Your house is that way…” Guy's voice trailed off at the end.
“What happened, Guy?” said Chris.
He wanted to tell Chris what had really happened rather than lying. He couldn't.
He didn't.
He just walked away. Chris didn't follow him, he just shouted “Same time tomorrow?” There was no answer.

Untitled Sorry it took so long.
Guy didn't go into his house. He just got into his car and drove. He drove out of the city, past green fields and enormous trees that dominated the landscape.
He opened one of the car windows and let the fresh air flood in in waves. It passed through his lungs easily, as if it was lighter than the air at home. The road was relatively empty considering the time of day, but after a while he grew tired of driving and pulled over into a small lay by, parking behind a DIY store lorry.
He was on the edge of a forest. It looked fairly overgrown, but there was a footpath, and since there was still some light left in the sky, he felt like it deserved to be explored.
At first he traversed the woods without much thought; hands in pockets, his mind, for once, at rest. As the daylight grew thinner, he wished he had brought a torch, or at the very least a phone with which to see. It was a full moon, but even still there was hardly enough light to see where he was going, let alone read his watch to check the time. Eventually, he found a clearing dominated by an extremely large tree trunk. He knew that he should go back to the car and go home, but it was so dark that he could hardly see his hand in front of his face.
Suddenly, he heard a twig snap, coming from the path he had just walked down.
A torch flickered on in the person's hand, causing Guy to squint at the bright light. Now that he could see better, he noticed something.
The man looked just like him.
Exactly like him, in fact.
The figure was getting closer by the second. All of Guy's thoughts said that it must be his brother, or someone else who looked a lot like him. But the more he stared at the person, the more he felt like he was looking in a mirror.
“Hello,” the person said.
“Who are you?” Guy replied, his eyes filling with fear and curiosity.
“My name's Rick,” he answered. “I'm your clone.”

Untitled {Chapter Seven}I must be dreaming thought Guy, searching for any sign that this wasn't real.
“I know it's confusing,” Rick said, almost as if he'd read Guy's thoughts, “but there's no time. I'll explain later — we need to get back to somewhere safe.”
They walked back to Guy's car silently, almost jumping at every shadow they saw. It was incredibly cold outside, and Rick was dressed in just jeans and a t-shirt. Eventually, they got back to the car.
“So Guy, like I said, I'm your clone,” Rick explained. “I was cloned from your DNA whilst you were asleep. You were our for a good few days… it's a shame your friends didn't notice, or maybe you would've been let out sooner.”
“Let out?” Guy said, shocked. “I was hardly let out!”
“You were. Did you seriously think that it would be that easy to escape whatever lab they've got going on down there? They're testing you Guy, testing you in the real world. And they're tracking you too.”
“How do you know all this? Isn't cloning illegal anyway?”
“Isn't kidnapping and experimenting illegal?” he replied, ignoring Guy's first question. Guy just sank back further into his seat. He should've seen it earlier. Obviously he had guessed after his arm had healed so quickly. It had only just struck him, however, that the plan might have had flaws too. “The point I'm trying to make, Guy, is that we need to get to that building and stop whatever it is they're doing.”
--------------------
Rick explained on the way how the organisation that had cloned Guy had had a rich and influential backer that had just pulled out of supporting them.
“They're scared. They're not immune to the law anymore.”
“Surely that's a good thing?” Guy said.
“Not at all. Now they want to destroy all of their work and run with the remaining money. That means me, Guy, and that means you.” Rick's words took a while to sink in. Guy just started to drive faster, pouring his rage and fear into the accelerator pedal.
The rest of the journey was silent. They parked the car around the corner from the building and tiptoed silently until they were stood in front of it.
“I'll let you in on a secret Guy,” said Rick, “I know all of this because I'm actually meant to be taking you here so that they can kill both of us. What they don't know is that I hate them and I'm on your side. I promise.”

Untitled {Chapter Seven}Rick reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a pistol.
“Where — ?” started Guy.
“They've got rooms full of the stuff and they're hardly afraid to use them. I managed to sneak a couple out before I left.” replied Rick.
Guy shoved the pistol into his own pocket so that it couldn't be seen. Together, they walked as normally as possible up to the building. Guy could hardly walk in a straight line, let alone resist the temptation to run away.
“Why don't we just call the police?” he whispered.
“Are you crazy? These people are professional criminals. Not only would they shoot the police down straight away, even if they were sent to prison they'll be the first people to organise an escape and then we'll be back where we started, and we don't want that, do we?” came the answer.
“What?”
They stopped. They were just outside the door.
“In we go,” said Rick. “Remember, start shooting as soon as we get into one of the rooms.”
With trembling fingers, Guy pressed the button in the lift and they plummeted downwards. After what felt like hours, it slowed to a stop. The doors opened, revealing the same white corridor that Guy had seen just a few days beforehand. He pulled the gun from his pocket and held it close to his side. He hadn't yet given much thought one whether he'd be able to use it when the time came.
Rick turned to him and pointed to the door that he was stood in front of. He pushed the door handle down and opened it slowly, revealing a large lab behind it.
And several people in the lab as well.
