I agree with Prissie. If someone wants to do it badly enough they will, but it would make it a HELL of a lot more difficult if the American rules applied to everyone. Yes I think they started locking cockpits after 9-11. But even if the co-pilot wasn't on a mission to kill himself and everyone else, someone could have a heart attack, get taken sick.. ANYTHING could happen.. it really does make sense to have another person in there. Or maybe some sort of password that only the crew know! Surely that works in banks, why not planes!

Just for the simple fact that the pilot could have an accident or a heart attack or any sort of incapacitating event, there should ALWAYS be a second person in the cockpit. I don't understand why an airline would refuse to implement such a simple rule.

so it seems that generally the crew know an emergency code to use to enter the cockpit. but seems the door was jammed/blocked somehow from the inside since the captain couldn't get inside. but this is an assumption since they only have the voice recorder.
what angers me is that still we rely on blackboxes to give all the information. these boxes are supposed to withstand whatever tragedy that happens and be found intact. why doesn't the aviation industry join the 21st century and stream out realtime data? looks like profit margins winning over better regulations/practices for safety, etc.

Can't add anything to that. I totally agree with you, gai.

I'm also wondering why the air traffic control tower can't remotely take over the controls of the plane if something weird seems to be happening up there? Onstar can take over the controls of my car if they find out its been stolen, so can't they do anything like this with planes?

It does seem that the technology wizards should be able to come up with something..

Ugh I can't listen to the news anymore, I have to just turn off the tv. I don't want to hear any more stories about the last moments of the plane crash, people screaming, etc. The news goes way too far sometimes.

Yeah, I totally get what you mean. If I were one of the family members, I didn't want know if my loved one knew he was crashing. I think in this case I prefer not knowing.

US politican Michele Bachmann just compared the Germanwings co-pilot who killed 150 people, to president Obama. What a disrespectful, vulgar and stupid comparison that is.

O__O I just tried to imagine what would happen if a politican in my country would say that. They would be shredded by the public and forced to quit being active in any political field after that.

Yeah, Freedom of Speech and all that, which is a great thing that I wouldn't change for the world, but it also sucks royally sometimes as well. You just can't stop stupid people from saying stupid things, which in some cases would be a great thing to do.
