Ive been reading about the guy who killed Cecil the Lion and I cant get my head around anyone who finds this acceptable There is a lot wrong with this world which we are powerless to change, but these beautiful creatures, in fact any defenceless animal should never be hunted for 'fun'
The fact that he paid an obscene amount of money just adds to my disgust at this man

I was just coming here to rant about that!
Poor, lovely Cecil. I hope the amount of press this is getting leads to some change in law, or change in people's thinking. These animals are beautiful creatures, who benefits from killing Cecil? Whoever got the $50000, sure, but that will disappear quickly enough. I wish there was something that could be done on a small level, I hate that I keep reading about this stuff.

What's good is the huge amount of the press that has come out about this, this guy's dental practice is done forever. At least everyone knows what he did and he won't get away without consequences.

True, but it sounds like he is loaded anyway! He can probably just afford to retire. Arsehole. Sorry, but this upsets me big time! :( This guy and whoever accepted that obscene amount of money should be put (unarmed) into a pen with several hungry lions.. see how they like it!

Perfect solution. I can't wrap my head around this anyway. A thriving, beautiful...endangered...lion on a protected reserve just living life was killed for no reason whatsoever. To stroke someone's God complex? It's so upsetting. He claimed he didn't know it was illegal. Bullsh--. Going into hiding isn't enough for this man. Losing his practice isn't enough either. He and the others involved - the ones that took the money and the ones that lured Cecil off of the reserve - need to be prosecuted at the very least. And there are other big game hunters hunting animals all of the time, some not predators at all. It's hard to justify this sort of thing to me.

Agreed. What is wrong with people that they need to do this? Get a video game if you have the desire to shoot things! Grrr...

I hate the idea of hunting for fun as well. People should just stop being so self-entitled — nothing gives you the right to shoot this creature. You are not above the law and you are certainly not above basic morals. It makes me angry too.
In a similar vein of thinking, fox hunting is also cruel. It's a contentious issue in this country, mainly between the upper classes (who are rich enough to do it) and the lower and some middle classes, who think it's pointless. It is pointless. I live in an area where fox hunting is still practiced, despite it being illegal. They're meant to chase the scent of a fox but I can assure you that they don't, they still chase actual foxes. Which is stupid. And they hunt other things too, like pheasants and stuff. I don't see the appeal. Just because someone is rich, it doesn't make it right for them to kill animals. Every time I see people dressed up in red coats, on horses and with hounds to hunt down the poor animal it just makes me angry.
Sorry for writing so much, but, hey this is the rant thread and all.

Don't apologise ! It IS a contentious issue (I would imagine everywhere) and it isn't just 'Rich' who do this, believe me. I used to ride horses, and have had times where I was invited to hunt. I never did. I did a drag hunt once, where we hunted a PERSON.. on another horse. No dogs and no foxes involved. I wouldn't ever do that. But people I know have. It's a British "tradition". :( Makes me sad.

This is one tradition I hate, along with shooting deer, birds etc. Its very different if people kill to eat, and as a meat eater I cant say otherwise, but I will never understand how any one can chase and kill animals, birds as 'fun' Fox hunting is one of the most barbaric of course, poor creatures

There's something wrong with those kinds of people. Normal people don't want to see an animal die. That's why even though we are like to eat hamburgers....we don't actually want to SEE the cow die. We don't want to think about that part.

It's part of the larger picture, many years ago, hubby and I went vegetarian. It's not easy, especially if you work and then come home and prepare food, plus the meat substitutes are rather expensive. I always say, if you forced me to go to a slaughterhouse, I would stick to being a vegetarian. I feel if we eat meat we should treat the animals better, they would live happier lives, and wouldn't the product taste better, frankly? But the bureaucrats think it's too expensive that way. We should treat animals all over the world better, endangered ones, pets, everything. It makes us better humans in the long runs.

I used to be a vegetarian; I've since changed and I feel that meat in moderation is OK. I'm a big fan of the work that Temple Grandin does; she is an animal rights advocate AND she eats meat, but she advocates and campaigns for much more humane treatment of animals on farms while they are alive, and she studies ways for them to be killed painlessly.

hey, a fellow vegetarian here. i am vegetarian for moral reasons and what i've found out is that animals raised for meat and their well-being during their short lifespan is not a topic of discussion most people are ready or care to have yet. but i am actually thrilled that however incredibly sad this idiot's actions were, game hunting has come to the fore front of mainstream media. people are enraged and vilifying the low lifes that practice this cruel "sport". just in game hunting, there is a much bigger picture to address. the financially challenged african countries have made issuing licences for hunting as well as illegal hunting a way of bringing in easy money. a lot of changes need to be made not only by the hosting countries, but more importantly the countries that actually export these lunatics. if there are restrictions imposed on importing big game hunting trophies in the western countries, that would be a fantastic step. airlines like delta have brought new policies of banning big game hunting trophy transportation. the governments should follow this lead. i was worried that people would forget this within a week, but although the news coverage went down over time as expected, people are still invested in how this would turn out. that is great. also, there are many ways how a general tourist indirectly supports big game hunting involuntarily. we as the general public need to be aware of this. look up "canned hunting". most of those wonderfully playful lion cubs that tons and tons of people go to pet in lion farms end up being killed by a trophy hunter. sadly, almost all visitors to these farms are unaware of their fate once they are grown. this is just scratching the surface. if you are interested in finding stats behind trophy hunting, check out this video. video

I'm also really happy to see that the issue got so much attention. I thought it was VERY cool that all of the airlines jumped on board to refuse to transport trophy animals anymore. I mean, the airlines could really lose money from taking that stand so that was impressive.

I'm happy this had been brought to the public's attention. It's horrible that in today's society some people still think big game hunting is acceptable! I didn't know it went on, clearly I am not in the minority, as the outcry over Cecil proves. I hope that his death brings some change.
