I think Magic could really be elevated depending on the context of the album. For example, what if the opening track were really chaotic and loud and in-your-face (like maybe a song like Politik, but a synth-based, electro adventure style of a song) and then the synths fade and get drowned out, and at the same time, the groove of Magic fades in. I just think it would be a very nice contrast. You see, when I listen to Magic, I feel like I'm in some sort of vaccum, or like I'm floating under water and looking up at the surface. The stripped-back nature of the song has an effect where everything around you seems to pause and all the sound is blocked out. So imagine going from a loud song to a simple song like Magic. Here's a metaphor to help explain what I'm getting at: Imagine you're running away from something terrifying... you're breathing heavily-- running for your life. You look back to see how close whatever's chasing you is. But as you look back you suddenly fall down a cliff that you didn't see coming because you were looking back. Now you're in free-fall... you're heart is still pumping extremely fast. The fall is terrifying yet exhilarating. Finally, you plummet into a lake below and there's a giant splash. As you sink down, you look back up at the surface and everything becomes quiet and still. You begin to process everything and you're grateful to still be alive. And your entire body relaxes and becomes limp, like a wave of relief rolls over you, and you can feel it travel from your center all the way to your fingers and toes. If that kind of feeling is achieved in the transition from Always In My Head to Magic, I'd be able to appreciate Magic much more. This gave me goosebumps! Thanks for that, it was great! I love that idea and I was there with your visual.

Finally Magic will do! I listened over and over but I could not get 'it'. And it did not 'get' me.... Now it is on repeat again, and I like it more and more. Had to get used on it I think. I still I like the second half the best, but for me the magic of Magic is finally shining through. Gladly :-)

Does anyone think the song could be about the band?

Does anyone think the song could be about the band? What a great thought! I love it, Sharon! makes total sense now that I think about it. They've come a long way.

Like most Coldplay songs, Magic benefits from repeated listens, and preferably, on headphones. I am really liking the "beachy" vibe I'm getting from it. It seems like a song you play with your loved one on a beach at sunset.

I would like to recant what I said previously and admit the song has grown on me massively! Yes the lyrics aren't the best but the song is solid.

KROQ played Magic last night as I was driving, the female DJ said at the end, when she first heard the song she thought, "Take me, I'm yours!" I think we all concur.

I've had it on repeat for a couple of days now and it gets better every time! What baffles me is why it took me a lot longer to appreciate and understand the song. I loved midnight instantly but this was a very different experience.
I hope others who dismissed it early on like me give it a few more listens and I'm sure they'll fall in love.

It's very strange that. When I first heard it I thought.. Oh wow, this is a single. To me it was instant. I thought everyone would love it. It's catchy, VERY catchy. Who of us hasn't found ourselves humming over and over the last few days? I loved it. I still love it, but I appreciate it more now. It has more depth to it than I originally thought. Really interesting to read others opinions.
Actually friend of mine who LOVES MX has heard it and said.. I'm not sure I like it. I shall tell her to listen a few more times.

I loved it as a first single, i thought it was way better than Paradise or ETIAW (whichever was the first single of the MX era) because it's what they do best, really, a catchy and simple love song

My word this song has become irresistible! The lyrics are basic to say the least but he gets away with it with the simplicity that encapsulates his whole vocal performance. His emotion is so profound that makes me realise that, actually, he doesn't need to say anything more. It's a sweet little love note - anymore and it would be getting into gushy Fix You territory and to be honest we don't need another one of those! The minimalist production is simply gorgeous and it sets the scene for one of the most refreshing pop songs in a long time.
