I voted for 5 starrs. Not sure if this is wat is ment, but for me it is maximum scale! LOL The song is right for 100%. Such a happy, new positive song. I like the singing, clapping, the rhythm, the mood, the drums, bass, guitar (a lot). Did not claerly listen to the lyrics - will do that later - but from the parts I allready know: it just fits in total. Even after several listenings I still have goosebumps and I am swinging in the room and on my chair. This song is just the best surprise for us after the long waitening. Coldplay, thanks! You do it again :-)

I'm confused and I don't know what to think of it. This post will probably reflect that so sorry in advance for any incoherence.
I don't know. It's a nice song. I don't dislike it but I don't love it either, and as people on coldplaying have said it just doesn't sound like Coldplay at all, take away the vocals and it could be Two Doors Cinema club or so. ...there is however nothing wrong with Two Doors Cinema Club and I'm not bothered by the fact that they don't sound like Coldplay, on the contrary. I would be disappointed if it sounded like their previous albums (unless it'd be AROBTTH but okay, that album is just rather perfect and I wouldn't mind more of that).
What does bother me is that it sounds pretty forgettable to me. If an earworm like this can be forgettable, that is. It just doesn't stand out like Viva or Speed of Sound or Clocks did. Even ETIAW stood out more (I like ETIAW but it's not their best I think)
Apart from the "ok but it's nothing too special"-feeling I also think it's a bit too repetitive and the wooohoos, just no. They're old; they did enough wooohoos on MX. No problem with wooohooos, but we've had enough wooohoos by now.
I didn't expect Oldplay, I didn't expect great lyrics, in fact I didn't know what to expect and now I don't know what we got. The lyrics aren't great. "You make me feel alive again" ok Chris i'm very very happy for you but....
It's clear though that they don't care what anyone thinks and that's a good thing. If they enjoyed making it and enough people like it so that the band doesn't go bankrupt, good job. I have other songs to listen to. I do hope I'll like the album because the best thing this band has given me is a bunch of friends I've met on here and elsewhere online and I want to join the awesome meetups at concerts in London and s**t (London is expensive and if I end up not liking the album...) :(
Ok sorry for the rambling.
Ps: great bassline, mr Berryman!

actually guy makes this song! anyway, the positives: the most artistically challenging coldplay song in probably the last 3 lps (other than midnight, but i give a lot of credit to jon hopkins for that). coldplay never sounded groovier! love it. and production fits the musical landscape, well done.
now to the negatives: some generic pop elements in there. but the things i wish most to have been improved are the lyrics and the outro.
overall, i'm happy with this record as a single. new territory for coldplay, more interesting than a lot of GS, and man, is the groove addictive or what?
i'll give it 7/10

I did click 5, as in excellent.
I see all the negativity on the internet. But I think that is coming from the fact that people are expecting things, things from which every actually know they wont do. They wont repeat themselfs, there wont be a parachtues 2 or a AROBTTH 2.
And with that in mind, I was hoping for something bombastic, joyfull. And that's exactly what we got. So I am happy.

I swear, I don't think I can be objective at all and freely admit that sometimes. Right now I'm so excited that I would give anything they did it said a 10.

Sorry guys.
The instrumentation is new for them, but I find it cringe worthy. I've never dissed a Coldplay song before but maybe this one is a grower. I don't like bashing on lyrics because I know personally it can be hard coming up with some. Granted Chris is a professional. AOAL's lyrics are just flat out terrible. My god.. "Get your magic on"? Really Chris... Don't get me started on some of the song titles... I feel let down at the moment, granted they don't owe us anything really. 12 songs including the hidden track " X marks the spot " seems fair. A good amount of songs so. A bunch of guests... Not sure about that, takes away from the feeling of just 4 guys playing and enjoying music. Personally.. I'm looking forward to the Noel Gallagher track, Birds, the album tittle track and the closing track Up&Up. I've never been let down before, hope this isn't the first. Once again sorry guys.

That's ok, Keaton I actually like hearing what everyone thinks about it, no matter if it is a good or bad review. For me, the whohohoos at the end just killed the track. Sorry ^^ I would give it a 3,5 because I like the rest, even if it doesn't really sound like Coldplay anymore. (Someone already said it before). Personally, I find the "they don't owe us" attitude a bit problematic. Certainly, they can do what they want to do but at the same time it should be allowed to express one's own opinion about art. All different views are most welcome here!

Interesting review Dustin! Maybe it's just today is a significant date where I have to remember someone close who passed away. But anyways! The more I listen to it, I guess it's not that bad. It definitely helps with coming up with new lyrics!

Thank you for the words Keaton & Hannah! I admit - like Sharon - that I probably are not objective at all either. All I do is follow the happy mood this music bring me. And the happy mood is still breaking records here :-) Personally I can follow your thought about AOAL - and sometimes I even envy your (orriginal) observation skills!! Don't be sorry for your opinion Keaton, really! I think it must be ok to not love a new song right away. Even when 'it' does not come after days or weeks or even months or never - it is ok. We all are different en so is the way we love or dislike music. Just wait with us in some nice tension what the album will bring us futher then AOAL :-)

I like it. I am looking foward to seeing it done live. I also hope there are more rocky songs on the album. I need another Clocks, or Politik.. I guess that is unlikely, but another Major Minus or GPAS would be good. But all in all, its a happy song, and I like it.

Mm,I'm undecided! I'm actually struggling to make out the lyrics so I'm not sure about them. Musically though it's not really my kind of thing. And I agree with above comments about all the woo-ing! I actually love Ghost Stories - it's very close to my favourite album now, and this is very different to that kind of sound that I like. If that makes sense?! So, I'm hoping that this will grow on me, but if not I'm still very excited to see what the rest of the album brings. At least an album means a tour!

I love the differences in perspectives. We all have our opinions! I can see all the comments above and I can only hope the rest of the album will be more what you hoped.

Me too. I personally love it because it's, like gai said, groovy.
I knew it would be different from Ghost Stories and upbeat, and I think we may get a variety of sounds on this album. I adore the rockier songs the best and want those too, of course. But like Anita, it brings me happiness so I'm all over it right now!
As for lyrics, after loving music my whole life and hearing the crazy lyrics of a lot of them, I don't put too much stock into the them. Plus, Chris had said numerous times that he bleeds over songs so I know they come from his heart no matter how hokey they may sound to some.
Yeah, they've got me wrapped around their little fingers.
