Coldplay concerts to set record for largest outdoor performance2017/04/11 21:41:22Taipei, April 11 (CNA) Coldplay, a British rock band, opened its first of two concerts at the high speed rail's Taoyuan Station Plaza Tuesday. Coldplay, formed in 1996 by lead vocalist and keyboardist Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland at University College London, is in Taiwan for the first time in two decades. The two concerts Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to attract an audience of nearly 80,000, according to the organizer, setting a record for the largest outdoor concerts by any foreign performers over the last two decades. Rain began falling on Tuesday morning after a summer-like day the previous day, sending the mercury down and leaving nearly 40,000 fans worried that they might have to watch the performance in the rain, but it petered out until around 8:25 p.m., when a downpour came. Martin expressed his appreciation that so many fans were willing to listen to them despite the rain. The band started with "A Head Full of Dreams," followed by a firework display. When the band performed its signature song "Yellow," a lot of fans sang along with them. Martin twice used Chinese to say "Hello, everyone," adding that he was happy to visit Taiwan for the first time. The Taipei station of the high speed rail system had been packed with people since early Tuesday afternoon making the trip to Taoyuan for the show. The organizer said the band had asked for security checks for the concerts to be in line with other nations in Asia. Explosives-sniffing dogs were on duty. The organizer distributed LED-illuminated wristbands as part of the lighting effects and urged fans to refrain from taking anything that emits light to the concerts. link

Amazing that they're so popular all over the world. I mean, I can't think of a band or a singer from Asia that's popular here, right? Maybe that "Gangnam Style" guy LOL.

It's very impressive. They are the biggest and most popular band in the world. I wonder if we told them when they were starting out that this is what would happen, what they would say?
