Coldplay's Head Full of Dreams Tour Earnings Up to $247 Million
1/7/2017 by Bob Allen
Coldplay wrapped the final 2016 leg of its ongoing A Head Full of Dreams Tour in December, capping a nine-month trek through five continents with a 12-day stint in Australia and New Zealand.
The Oceania run included sold-out concerts at stadiums in four markets: Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. With a total box office take of $26 million during the four-city trek (which lead the latest Hot Tours list, below), the British band’s overall gross from its world tour has now reached $247 million since kicking off last spring.
Coldplay has performed for 2.7 million fans at 58 performances since the tour’s March 31 launch in Buenos Aires, based on box office stats reported to Billboard.
Following a slate of stadium dates and a handful of festival appearances in 40 cities in the Americas and Europe, as well as a November headlining slot at the Global Citizen Festival in Mumbai, the Oceania leg of the tour began in New Zealand at Auckland’s Mt Smart Stadium on Dec. 3. The first Australian concert was held in Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium three days later. Both stadiums hosted the tour for a single performance, but Etihad Stadium in Melbourne and Sydney’s Allianz Stadium followed with two-show engagements in their markets.
The Melbourne venue produced the best box office results during the jaunt Down Under, logging $8.9 million in ticket sales from 103,482 sold tickets for shows on Dec. 9 and 10. Sydney was the tour’s final stop of the year with concerts on Dec. 13 and 14. Coldplay headlined at the same four venues in 2012 during the final days of the Mylo Xyloto Tour. Grosses that year were about 6 percent higher overall, but the 2016 trek saw an 18 percent increase in the number of sold tickets.
The Head Full of Dreams Tour, currently booked through early October, is set to resume at the end of March in Singapore, the first of six Asian markets on the itinerary. A second trek through Europe is planned for June and July, followed by a final sweep through 18 North American cities from Aug. 1 through Oct. 8.
The tour supports Coldplay's seventh studio album, A Head Full of Dreams, which bowed in December 2015. It was ranked No. 3 on Billboard’s list of the Top 25 Tours of 2016. The group joined Beyonce and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band as the only artists to top $200 million in ticket sales during the year.
