I don't know enough about the workings of the record company to know if they're a cause. I do see the point that kaisin is making with the benefit of this not setting us up for failure in a way, but on the other hand I wish we had more. The only reason I say that is because it feels like (and don't jump on me for this.. it could be an off perception) to me that they're kind of half assing it this time around. Just the fact that they're putting something out has made waves, but I'd love to see some more from them pre release. Maybe we'll get that after the itunes festival. I was waiting for someone to say that. I kind of feel the same. They are taking it easy. With Chris being in the US all the time and other things (the gym quote about not touring...) I hope I'm wrong. What I could NEVER understand is how a band with such a huge and amazing back catalog of songs (Ghost, Famous Old Painters, Until the water flows...God knows what else they have in store!) would release something like Up in flames and keep the good stuff unreleased for years, possibly forever.

^ I don't see it as half-assing at all. I think it is a very good strategy on their part and i think it was intentional. as much as we love the band, most casual listeners have gotten tired of them. they are one of the biggest bands in the world and they are inescapable when they come up with a new album for at least a year or so every 3 years. the themes, clothes, stage setups, everything are strongly bound to their identity. not to mention the heavy promotion even months before the album comes out. this has been the case since x&y, but more so with the last 2 albums. to release an album without heavy promotion is a very good idea i think. and both midnight and magic show a side of coldplay that wasn't seen much in the recent releases. they seem to be going for an understated, minimalist record this time around and the low hype around it suits well i think. and of course it adds mystery and keeps everyone guessing. that is a good thing. a band as big as this does not have to fall back on the same promotional tack ticks. if they play their cards right, they will get all the promotion without doing many interviews, etc. doesn't mean they are not committed and driven as before. so far, they have been doing a pretty good job of it i'd say.

^I tend to agree. Chris said a long time ago that they were going to brings things down a bit and reset the bar instead of trying to get bigger and bigger. So, I believe the minimalist approach is intentional as well.

Like I said.. I'm new to the game. So I don't really know what the status quo is for this. I see what you guys are saying, and it makes sense to me. I just look forward to hearing more from the guys about this project, that's all. I go back and watch pre album inverviews for the other releases all the time, I just love hearing that stuff. Anyway.. interesting thing I saw: In this interview with Gwyneth she says that one of her three favorite Coldplay songs is on this record. Start at 2:20

I understand what you're saying. But I do truly believe they also think that maybe they released too much before MX came out. All the songs with the exception of about three, we had already heard. This time the excitement is rumbling FAR more. It doesn't feel half arsed to me. Anchorman was teasing us for months, and so was Chris, letting slip clues, which we all missed totally! So I do believe they are 100% behind this release and are just approaching it from another angle. Personally I prefer to have as many new songs as possible left for May. I want to appreciate the album as a whole this time.

We already have two songs, so I'm looking forward to hearing the rest on the 19th.

This is awesome! I love hearing tech facts like this. I wonder what his living room is like; I'm guessing tall ceilings and a hard floor. That kind of a sound wouldn't come from a carpeted area.

Few thoughts on what has been said throughout this thread. At the iTunes festival I reckon new songs will be premiered - definitely for their entrance , add in Midnight and 2 others , and then they probably close with Magic. So am calling 5 in total to played live from the album.
The album to have 2 hidden tracks (possibly Ghost Stories being one)
The tour to be low key - mainly arena's and nothing of the scale of the MX Tour.
Media , interviews etc - I don't think there will be any to the build up to the album - I have a feeling they really want to keep the focus on the music this time - almost like letting their music tell the story type thing.
Its really thrown me how they approached the announcement of the album this time round , but it definitely keeps it exciting for us fans.

Is this different from the target ones?

Regarding the small number of only 9 tracks on the album - maybe they'll release an EP afterwards like they did with Prospekt's March.

I disagree. You might be over thinking every minute detail. There will definitely be a grand world tour. And they are definitely not taking it easy. With at least the first two songs, you can tell that a lot of thought went into the production. Sure they have much less layers than Viva or MX tracks, but sometimes less is more. Everything you don't hear is just as important as everything you do hear.
